I recently had the opportunity to speak to a group about addiction – addiction to negative, pain, chaos, turmoil, you get the picture.  What was interesting about my audience was that every individual is in recovery for some hurt, hang up, or habit.  It is Celebrate Recovery!

Being in leadership, I hear lots of personal stories.  Since being part of MKE, I am hearing things differently because I am listening differently.  Yes, doing this with NO OPINION has been a challenge but oh, so rewarding!  The people who are part of this recovery program are committed and determined individuals who have undergone and overcome some unbelievable situations.  To me, they are heroes for bettering themselves, thus making a difference.

However, all of us, along the road of life, have been told a lie, believe it because we don’t think much of ourselves, and then develop routines and habits that support the lie.  It was my observation of this pervasive, erroneous thinking, that spurred me to share what I have been learning, linking, and loving in the Master Key Experience course.

This is how it went…..

Good Evening.  I am a believer in Jesus Christ, who is in recovery for co-dependency, my name is Louise.

All of us find ourselves questioning our situation, wondering how we got here or how can I stay out of the mess.  Sometimes, I am the mess and where ever I go, my problem goes, too.  Time to stop and face it!  Time to ask a couple of questions.

  • What behaviors do I tend to fall back on when faced with adversity, pressure, or uncomfortable situations?
  • Do I bury my head in the sand to avoid facing the head wind?
  • Do I blame, criticize, or judge the actions/inactions of others instead of taking personal responsibility for outcomes?

Did anyone relate to the first question and/or answer the next two in the affirmative?  If so, now what?

Thoughts are not facts, they can always be changed.  The same holds true for attitudes and behaviors.

‘I AM trying, but nothing is happening……’

Trying to change can be exhausting.  (Believe me, I know.  I was exhausted when I came to MKE).

Committing to change sets in motion things that come as a result of forward determination.  If you want the island, burn the boats.

Practice change.  This is what I learned to do and it is transformational.

  • Write down one positive thing you did.  I know it is hard to think that way, but start.  I know one positive thing about all of you, so write it down – YOU ARE HERE!  See, it doesn’t have to be grandiose, just something positive.  Now that your pumps are primed, write down two more positives!  Read these every day.  Add 3 positives, every day.  I write each positive on a 3 x 5 card.  I read them every day and every day I am feeding my head with positive.
  • On another card, I write a SERVICE I am committed to complete on or before the week is over.  At the bottom of that card I write,  I always keep my promises.  Once the service is completed, CELEBRATE!!!  This is success!!!

I have been reading a wonderful book that addresses this so well.  The book is The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino.  This excerpt is from Chapter 8, Scroll I,  Which two, among a thousand wise men, will define success in the same words, yet failure is always described but one way — Failure is man’s inability to reach his goals in life, whatever they may be.

…….Good habits are the key to all success.  Bad habits are the unlocked door to failure.  Thus, the first law I will obey, which precedeth all others is — I will form good habits and become their slave.

Likewise, a great thinker, Charles Haanel, authored Master Key Experience in 1921, in which he wrote this in Part 5, #12:

“We need a mental house-cleaning, and to have this house-cleaning every day, and keep the house clean.  Mental, moral, and physical cleanliness are absolutely indispensable if we are to make progress of any kind.”

But don’t leave a vacuum…..In Luke 11:24-25, we are warned, ‘When an unclean spirit (bad habit) comes out of a man, it passes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it.  Then it says – I will return to the house I left. – On its return, it finds the house swept clean and put in order.  Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and dwell there.  And the final plight of that man is worse than the first.’

We cannot deny and squelch bad habits, they just keep coming back.  We must REPLACE them.   Here is some more wisdom from Og Mandino in Scroll I – ‘…for each scroll contains a principle which will drive a bad habit from my life and replace it with one which will bring me closer to success.  For it is another of nature’s laws that only a habit can subdue another habit.’

Celebrate those successes!!!  You are building good habits!!!  Fill yourself, His temple, with good habits.

Romans 12:2 ‘Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — His good, pleasing and perfect will.’

To my fellow Masterminds,

And because we are made in His image, Haanel connects the dots in Part 6, #18:  The man who looks within instead of without cannot fail to make use of the mighty forces which will eventually determine his course in life and so bring him into vibration with all that is best, strongest, and most desirable.

Powerful stuff!
